Answer

Ask, specifically, at the right moment.

Most referrals do not happen because nobody asked. When people do ask, they usually ask badly — "if you know anyone who needs my services, send them my way" gives the other person nothing to work with.

Ask specifically instead: "Do you know one or two [Target Customer] in [Location] dealing with [problem]?" A specific question produces names; a general one produces goodwill and nothing else.

Timing matters. The best moments are immediately after a successful delivery and immediately after someone says something positive unprompted.

Make it easy: offer a short blurb they can forward, or offer to write the introduction yourself once they give you a name and permission.

Then close the loop — tell them what happened. People refer more when they know it went well.
